If you have been watching the news, you would be inclined to believe that this massive hurricane has only hit the East Coast of the USA. That the only people effected and suffering are US citizens.

This is bigger than America.

Old Bushel Britches in no way intends to sounds insensitive or to belittle the significance and human tragedy of those who have lost their live in the US. Any loss of life is tragic.

The US has been ultra prepared for this though – there have been evacuations, roads shut down, early warning signals, sandbags galore and a dedicated team of first responders specifically trained to deal with this problem.

What about those countries where there is not the infrastructure to deal with these issues. Where there aren’t buildings designed to withstand a hurricane. Where people can’t be evacuated because they have nowhere else to go.

Haiti, not even anywhere near back on its feet after the 2012 Earthquake and recent cholera outbreak (http://oldbushelbritches.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/the-effects-of-drop-in-ocean.html) has counted at least 52 dead. There have been at least 11 deaths in Cuba, two in the Bahamas, two in the Dominican Republic, one in Jamaica and one in Puerto Rico. On top of this mudslides and over flowing rivers have washed away people’s homes, livelihoods, crops and possessions. Disease will be rife throughout these countries and the suffering even more horrendous than we could ever imagine.

Will the aid they receive be adequate? I highly doubt it.

Obama will be praised for his quick response in administering federal aid to those states worst hit. His response may even win him a second term in office. The world will look on and praise America’s spirit in coming together in a time of need. It won’t care that it failed to reach out it’s hand to those neighbors around it who shared this storm and now more than share the suffering it has caused.

As the British media yet again panders to the cultural hegemony of the USA, a typhoon hits the Philippines and kills 19 people and an Afghan woman is beheaded for refusing to be a prostitute.

The world is bigger than the USA. Don’t forget that.
